In the summer of 2009, the Barksdale Reading Institute and the Center for Education innovation developed a partnership in professional development for K-1 teachers in our "Delta Promise" school districts. "Effective Reading Instruction" utilizes a systematic and consistent set of strategies, techniques, models, and templates that can be used with any basal series in K-1. Cohort 1 training included approximately 60 teachers from 7 Delta school districts. The three day training for cohort 1 teachers was videotaped (and edited and edited some more) and is now available for use by any school or teacher preparation institution in Mississippi. In June 2010, cohort 2 training took place with the addition of 2nd grade teachers with 5 school districts/25 teachers participating. In addition, "ERI" professional development was designed and delivered for K-2 teacher assistants and literacy coaches serving those same grade levels. In 2009-10, CEI literacy coaches were placed in West Bolivar, Benoit, West Tallahatchie, and Leland school districts. For school year 2010-11, an additional CEI literacy coach has been added to serve in the Claiborne County School District (A.W. Watson Elementary) making a total of 5 CEI literacy coaches who train, organize, assist, model, and demonstrate "ERI" principles systematically and consistently. (See Printed Material for More Information) CEI is most grateful for the partnership with the Barksdale Reading Institute as we strive to improve teaching and learning in Mississippi!
